John 1

Before diving right in: this is just a reminder to go read the passage before you begin. Thank you.

When reading John 1, there are three things that jump out to me.

1. Can I get an amen! That Jesus was and is and is to come. The first several verses of John are dedicated to showing who Jesus is. Jesus is the Word, He is life, He is light in the darkness. And the beauty of it all is that He came and dwelt among us, and through He was and is rejected by many, He wants us to become children of God. For the unsaved, what a chance to be washed clean and saved! For the Christian, let us rejoice in His love for us and glorify our Father above!
2. John the Baptizer - Oh how we can learn from him! From the beginning, he knew that he would be a forerunner for Christ, and he dedicated his life to paving the way for Jesus. Though he was respected among many (and considered a bit crazy by others), when the time came and he was questioned about if he was the Christ or a prophet, he knew his place in the grand scheme of things. Instead of getting a big head or taking any attention for himself, John made sure to throw all the attention and glory to the coming Messiah. I think we could learn a thing or two from that. We live in a world that is self-celebrating, and many times, it is easy to think we deserve credit or accolades for things we have done. It is so easy to forget to give God the glory for those things in our lives that He has allowed. So let’s be like John: shine bright and reflect the glory back to where it originated from… God our Father.
3. The last part of the passage begins with John standing with two of his own disciples. John then states “Behold the Lamb of God.” Immediately, those two disciples followed after Jesus. And on and on it goes through the rest of the chapter. Andrew, and Simon, and Philip, and Nathanael… at the bidding of Jesus when he says “Follow me,” they go. No buts, no what ifs, no wait until blah blah blah. They just went. Oh that we could follow Jesus with that relentless abandonment. Yes, there will ALWAYS be a cost, but in the end (and in the durings and when it is hard to do), Jesus is worth everything.
